About the B. Sc Home Science (Honors With Research) Program in Foods & Nutrition
INTRODUCTION
The Department of Home Science Foods & Nutrition is a component of the Faculty of Science and Applied Science in the Gujarat Vidhyapith, Ahmadabad. The Department of Home Science in Foods & Nutrition was established recognizing the critical role foods and nutrition play in promoting the health and well-being of people. The undergraduate program in Foods and nutrition is designed to impart training and skills to the students in specializations namely areas of Foods and nutrition along with knowledge & skills necessary for understanding the role of Food Science in achieving better nutrition for individuals and for communities. B. Sc. Home Science Foods and Nutrition (Honors With Research) The department has been enjoying the status of being the recipient of UGC- Program NEP (2020). The department has also received generous grants from UGC for infrastructure development over the years.
Student Learning Goals and Objectives
The Foods & Nutrition Department faculty strives to provide the highest quality educational experiences for our students, incorporating cutting edge research information with the fundamental knowledge and skills needed by nutrition professionals of the future. The curriculum supports attainment of the Department of Home Science Foods & Nutrition Educational Objectives Develop effective communication skills; Develop higher cognitive skills; Cultivate the virtues; Develop focus and depth in one or more disciplines; Develop leadership skills, develop a global perspective; Prepare for lifelong learning). The foods & nutrition curriculum prepares students to be leaders in the next generation of nutrition scientists, public health and clinical nutrition practitioners. The program promotes personal scholarship and academic growth, lifelong learning skills, and mastery of core knowledge in nutrition and health nutrition. Student Learning Outcomes Statements:
- Students will be able to demonstrate critical thinking skills to analyze data and
- interpret results in the area of nutritional/Food sciences, clinical nutrition & Public Health nutrition.
- Students will be able to determine nutritional status of individuals in various life cycle stages and/or with nutrition-related chronic diseases by applying knowledge of metabolism and nutrient functions, food sources and physiologic systems.

- information, design and implement nutrition behavior change communication strategies and materials.
- Students will be able to understand the National Nutrition priorities, Aims, objectives & target groups of National Flagship Nutrition & Health programs with field placements to understand the field realities and bottlenecks in the implementation of the programs.
- Students will be able to understand the basics of meal planning & for planning & preparing healthy nutritious diets throughout the life cycle and special diets as medical nutrition therapy for various diseased conditions.
The Department allows some flexibility in the major program to provide for maximum individual growth, development, and career choices. At the same time, the student has the opportunity to become qualified for pursing commonly accepted community standards for professional positions, such as those in Dietetics and Public Health Nutrition.
Career Goals & Opportunities
The honors degree program in Foods & Nutrition is a traditional academic programs designed to give students a broad, versatile education in the broad area of Foods & Nutrition. They are not intended to prepare students for a specific slot in the job market, but rather educate students in a specific area and provide the analytical and critical thinking skills necessary for coping with a changing world. Consult with an adviser in areas of interest about how to round out your program to suit your career goals. Also remember that there is little correlation between grades and career success. Many employers hire people based on their interest in a job, their willingness to learn and work hard, and their ability to get along with people. Graduate and professional programs usually have minimum GPA requirements, but they are also interested in candidates who show the characteristics needed to be successful in their programs. Students with degrees in Foods & Nutrition find employment within a wide range of organizations. Employers include: medical facilities, research laboratories, firms, government agencies, schools, pharmaceutical companies, Non-government organizations/professional organizations and the food industry. With so many options available, it is important for you to decide in which area of nutrition and in what kind of organization you would like to work. Are you interested in lab work? Do you want to work for a small company or a large one? Do you want to work in the health field? Do you want to work B. Sc ,Home Science Foods & Nutrition,Honors With Research in public health settings? Are there courses at Department of Foods & Nutrition which you should be taking to prepare for certain careers? These are just a few of the questions you need to answer before deciding on a specific career. Many of the careers you may wish to pursue require specialized training after graduation from Department of Foods & Nutrition. Many of our graduates have continued their education and have gone into such fields as clinical nutritionists/Dieticians and nutrition specialists in government, national/international non-government organizations and United Nations (UNICEF, WFP etc,) and teaching. Nutrition which you should be taking to prepare for certain careers? These are just a few of the questions you need to answer before deciding on a specific career. Many of the careers you may wish to pursue require specialized training after graduation from Department of Foods & Nutrition. Many of our graduates have continued their education and have gone into such fields as clinical nutritionists/Dieticians and nutrition specialists in government, national/international non-government organizations.
We need to reorient Home Science education and response to the concern about the relevant of home science programme today. is to create world class committed Public Health, Dietetics, Nutrition and Food Science professionals who can contribute meaningfully to the social, economic and health development of the country.
The mission of home science education compels us to engage continually in personal and professional relaxation leading to a philosophy, knowledge base and practice that in enables and empowers individuals and families to live and flourish in today’s challenging and perplexing word.Towards this mission our goals are to persistently update and enrich our academic programme, expand our network with other institutions, establish national and international collaborations and explore all avenues for extension.
